Dakota

Annabelle Stewart, all tight leather skirt and hot lace panties, thundered into my life for one night after a rock show and calmly drove away the next day. She should have been like any other one-night stand I’ve had over the last ten years touring with Balefire. But she wasn’t. At odd moments, I catch myself thinking about her, wondering if I made as big an impression on her as she did on me.

Then I walk into the rehearsal for our drummer’s wedding, and who’s standing with the bride? The hottie who keeps me awake with thoughts of our one night together. Beautiful, smart, and sassy as hell, Annabelle sets me on fire with her kisses and leaves me hanging. But I’ve got plans for her.

Annabelle

I never expected to see him again. Two years after hooking up with Dakota Perri after a Balefire concert, I’d convinced myself that night was a fantasy. But the way he looks at me during Jack and Clio’s wedding, like he remembers every second of our one-night stand, lights me up. Too bad I blew it.

Then I score a management internship with the band, an opportunity guaranteed to land me a scholarship with a top graduate program—if I don’t earn a reputation for sleeping my way to success. Which is a problem. I see Dakota every day. Every time we’re together, the sparks fly faster and hotter. If I want to achieve my goals, I have to resist him. But how can I resist a man as panty-meltingly hot as Dakota Perri when he says he’s wild for me?

My Review

My rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Dakota is the playboy party animal of the Balefire crew. He’s never turned down a willing groupie and he’s not looking to start now. Though thoughts of one wild night with one wild woman a couple of years ago, keeps him up on those lonely nights – in more ways than one. He’s accepted that his dream girl is a thing of the past, but when he walks in for dress rehearsal of his drummer’s wedding, who should he see standing next to the bride but that wild woman who has lived rent free in his thoughts all this time. Seeing this as his second chance to catch the one that got away, he’ll do everything in his power to make her his.

Annabelle lived a groupies dream when she got to spend the night with party boy Dakota Perri after the band’s concert at Red Rocks; and that’s what it stayed as, a dream. For if she let herself believe that it really happened, she didn’t think her heart could take it. No other man would ever stack up to the band’s bad boy guitarist, but at least it was something that she’ll remember, always. So when she sees him at her best friends wedding rehearsal she doesn’t get her hopes up, she’s just another face in the crowd. But when Dakota notices her and then proves that he remembers her, in more ways than one, her heart wants to take that leap and believe, just for a second, that there could be more between the two of them. When she scores a management internship with the band, she’s flying sky high. This will look fantastic on her resume, and she’ll get to tag along and perve on Dakota a bit. However, she can’t let her heart get in the way, it’ll only destroy the dream she’s working toward, and let’s face it, Dakota wouldn’t want her anyway, not really….right?

I requested this book and signed up for the tour in the hopes of being successful as soon as I saw it. I was part of a blog tour for DeRudder’s second book in this series – Sing for Me – which follows Balefire’s lead singer and his quest after the literal girl next door. That one was an absolute page turner for me, even in it’s predictability. I flew through that book and just knew the same thing would happen with this one.

This book is focused on another member of the band – Dakota Perri. I was super curious to see how the story would play out (even though I knew how it would end up) because Dakota’s character in Sing for Me came across as lecherous and sleezy. So him actually finding a girl that makes him want to cut his play boy ways and maybe settle down? I was down to read that story, and I’ll admit, even though it’s fluff and predictable and all those things, it was a damn enjoyable read and I will not be ashamed for enjoying it. Sometimes you need something that has cliches or predictability to it’s story line to just have a break and simply enjoy something light. This was exactly what I was looking for.

The characters were once again well written and I enjoyed learning more about the characters that are touched on in the other book. It was nice getting an indepth look into Dakota’s mind and seeing the issues that make him the way that he is. I also enjoyed Annabelle’s character, though at times found I really just wanted to shake her and make her wake up a bit and realise what’s happening. She’s so down on herself and how a big bad rock star couldn’t possibly be interested in her when said rock star is standing there waving the giant fluorescent flags to say exactly that. And while that annoyed me, I can’t help but also sympathise with her thinking because I feel like every body is scared of disappointment. No one wants to get their hopes up for that one huge thing that they really want, just to have their heart torn apart when it doesn’t happen. So even though we all know where the story will end up and we can all see how into Annabelle he really is, I can get on board with her thought patterns. They still annoyed me though. Another thing that bugged me was how she wasn’t telling anyone what Garret was doing? I’d have been telling at least Dakota what was going on, I get that she was worried for her future, but I don’t get how she thought that the things he was doing were okay. I also don’t even understand why he was still there after what happened in Sing for Me. I thought he’d have been kicked to the curb by the band straight away after that.

The story itself is, as said above, predictable, light, easy reading fluff, and I am here for it. I love a good romance where the characters are trying to work through their own issues in order to learn how to love and be loved. I love that we know there’s going to be a happy ever after at the end, and I love the journey to get there. Is this the next amazing piece of literature, no. Is it an enjoyable read, with engaging characters, a page turning story line? Yes. I also love DeRudder’s voice in her writing, it’s such an easy flow and just keeps me turning page after page long after I should have gone to sleep. I also love how different all of her characters are to each other, they all have such noticeably distinct voices and personalities and they stay consistent.

I’m looking forward to the next book in this series, and I think I’m going to go back and read the first one as I haven’t done that yet. If you’re looking for a light, easy read with a guaranteed HEA then jump into this series. It’s a refreshing read in the romance genre, in my opinion, and I really enjoy reading about a bad boy image rock band finding their one and only.
