I Am Arcana by Kristy Nicolle
My rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I want to start this review by pointing out, I am not a poetry reader. I think I borrowed a poetry book in high school once, in an attempt to be deep and all that, but besides that, I don’t read poetry. This collection of poems by Kristy Nicolle touched me in a way that I didn’t think was possible. I didn’t think I had the right brain to be able to appreciate poetry, but I think the problem was, I was trying to read poetry that wasn’t able to speak to me because I wasn’t the right audience.
This collection of poems is based around the Major Arcana of the Tarot deck. This is what sparked my interest when Nicolle approached me and offered me a copy in exchange for review. I’ll be honest, if it had been any other poetry collection, I probably would have turned it down, but because of the nature of this particular collection, I couldn’t say yes fast enough. I can read Tarot and have been doing so for quite some time now. I do consider myself part of the realm of the Witch, so these poems all spoke to me in such a way that I had butterflies dancing under my ribcage to the imagery that these poems painted in my mind.
Three poems in particular stuck out to me and these are my favourites. I believe I highlighted them, so they should so up when I share my highlights. I read this in one sitting because I just couldn’t put it down. I had to see what the next poem was going to sing. Each card has three poems which I felt was brilliant as it felt like each card was given such a deep exploration which they all deserved.
I can’t say too much more besides the fact that this has made me want to try reading poetry again. This will sit up there as a favourite for me in this genre because no poetry has sparked a fire inside of me like this collection did. Thank you Kristy Nicolle for your magic with words.
