Today is like any other day for Kayla Harlow. She has to go to her shitty job and put up with her shitty boss while making sure to keep her witch status a secret from the humans around her. However, after an even more shitful day than normal, Kayla’s boss ends up dead, and she ends up the prime suspect. Now she’s out to find the real murderer in order to clear her name, but it won’t be easy with Detective Kier on her tail every step of the way as she’s been doing some rather questionable things for a white witch. With the help of her ex-boyfriend, a shifter called Darren and a fae Prince will she be able to clear her name and get on with her life?
I’ve had this sitting on my kindle for a while. I love a good urban fantasy especially one centered around witches, I just have a soft spot for them. I’m a bit torn with this one though. The story itself had good ideas, but it just didn’t hold up to my expectations I think.
I had a big problem with the narration of the story. This whole story ran along the lines of telling instead of showing. It felt very clunky and made it difficult to become engaged in what was happening. There wasn’t really a flow to the writing, in my opinion. There were also some confusing mishaps with sentences that I feel another round or two of editing would have helped iron out.
When the story began, I felt like I had come in in the middle of something. Now, this can be a good way to start a story, but it took me a little while to wrap my head around who was who, where we were and what day of the week it was. This did drop off though, and it became an incredibly easy to read story that was entertaining in it’s own way that I flew through it fairly quickly.
The characters. Kayla was an okay character, but I felt like she was a bit naive and sometimes, a little too dense, this may have been the writing style that caused this though. She annoyed me a bit at times, but I didn’t want to suffocate her with a pillow. Darren was a good character that I enjoyed reading about and I’m hoping (and I’m pretty confident that my hopes will be answered) that we get to learn more about him in the coming installments. Rhydian was a good character, and incredibly intriguing. Lizzy was an okay support character but I feel like she should have had more to do with the story itself as the plot moved along. My favourite character was Solas, the demon that we meet in the beginning, I sincerely hope we get to see more of this one, he’s feisty.
The mystery part of the story was okay, though we never actually get a solid answer as to whodunit? it’s sort of just left in the wind, I’m not sure if we find out more further down the line, or if this is just it, which I found a little weird.
I believe this is a reverse harem series, however, from what I can conclude from this first installment, it’s a slow burn, which to be honest, I quite prefer. The instalove and falling into bed with random strangers who now all of a sudden are all demanding to be your bed partner can get a bit much and make me roll my eyes until they fall out of my head. So I feel the slow burn in this one works perfectly, there’s no set decision on who is going to end up with Kayla, though we have an idea, and I’m interested to see where it goes from here.
All in all, this was an entertaining enough read, though I didn’t really connect with any of the characters and the authors voice sounded a bit unpolished and clunky. I’m not going to give up though, I actually love a series where you can see the author’s voice growing more confident and evolving. I’ve read series before where this has happened, and it just made me love it all the more. I will continue with this series, and I’m left feeling intrigued and I want to see what happens next for the characters I got to meet.
